Some people get antsy after two hours in a car. For others, driving is a vacation in itself. Here are four of the wildest and best road trips around the world, from the Australian outback to the Romanian mountains.
The Red Centre Way is a five- to seven-day, 700-mile road trip that loops through the Australian outback. It begins at Alice Springs, a picturesque town that's surrounded by the red sand desert and the rough MacDonnell Ranges. From there, you head west, taking in the arid scenery and perhaps spotting a clan of rock wallabies. The grand finale is Ayers Rock, Australia's most famous natural wonder, which takes on a fiery glow at sunrise.

Wish the highway would never end? The closest you can get to endless blacktop is a 30,000-mile road trip along the Pan-American Highway. It's not really a single highway, but rather a network of roads that extends through 18 countries from Alaska to Argentina. It took decades to complete the highway, which remains broken by a 54-mile stretch of rainforest in Panama called the Darien Gap. To continue your journey, you'll have to ship your car by boat. How long will it take you? The record for driving the Pan-American Highway by motorcycle is 34 days, but don't expect to beat that.

Sure, you could join a guided safari tour and see all kinds of African wildlife from the safety of your seat. But if you prefer to strike out on your own, consider a road trip through northeastern Botswana. The Safari Company suggests one popular 12- to 15-day route that's recommended for experienced 4x4 drivers. It begins in the town of Maun and goes north to the Moremi Wildlife Reserve, which allows the opportunity to explore the Okavango Delta by dug-out canoe (mokoro). Other reserves are home to migrating zebras, herds of elephants and prides of lions. The route ends at the breathtaking Victoria Falls on the border with Zambia.

When you think about European road trips, you probably picture zipping along the German Autobahn or cruising along Italian country lanes. But the absolute best European road trip, according to many passionate drivers, is one you've never heard of: the Transfagarasan Highway in Romania.
This 55-mile-long, two-lane road twists like a snake through the Fagaras Mountains and past Poenari, the ruined castle of Vlad the Impaler, a.k.a. Dracula. Britain's car show "Top Gear" pronounced it the world's best road, saying, "It looks like every great corner from every great racetrack in the world has been knitted together to create one unbroken gray ribbon of automotive perfection."
