Travel Delay
Allianz - travelers waiting on delayed flight

Definition: Your trip is delayed for three hours or more consecutive hours for a covered reason. (The length of a covered delay varies by plan.) Travel insurance can reimburse the unused part of your prepaid expenses, minus any refund you receive. If a covered delay causes you to miss the departure of your cruise or tour, your travel delay benefits can pay reasonable transportation expenses to help you rejoin your cruise/tour or reach your destination.

Also, if delayed for a covered reason, you may be reimbursed for reasonable, eligible expenses — up to the limit specified in the policy — for meals, accommodation and transportation. If your plan includes SmartBenefitsSM, you can opt to receive a fixed inconvenience payment of $100 per insured person, per day, for a covered travel delay (up to the maximum no-receipts limit). No receipts required — just proof of a covered delay. You may receive this payment automatically if your covered travel delay occurs on a flight monitored by Allianz Global Assistance. Just submit your flight itinerary online before you travel.

Example: You and your daughter spend a long December weekend in New York City window-shopping the boutiques on Madison Avenue, seeing the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, and ice skating in Central Park. Then, a heavy snowstorm cancels your train home to Philadelphia, which means you’ll have to pay for another night at your hotel. That’s going to be expensive!

Fortunately, your trip delay benefits can help. Because your journey home was delayed for a covered reason, your travel insurance plan can reimburse you for the eligible expenses incurred during the delay: the extra hotel night, your dinner, and even your morning coffee and bagel.

Epidemic Coverage Endorsement: While epidemics are generally excluded from travel insurance coverage, we are currently offering certain temporary accommodations for COVID-19 related claims. Also, some of our travel insurance plans now include the new Epidemic Coverage Endorsement, which adds covered reasons to select benefits for certain losses related to COVID-19 and any future epidemic. (Benefits vary by plan and are not available in all jurisdictions).

Certain Epidemic Coverage Endorsement products with Travel Delay benefits add a denied boarding covered reason under that benefit.  For customers with one of those products, if a travel carrier denies you boarding based on a suspicion that you have a contagious medical condition, including an epidemic disease such as COVID-19, that may be eligible for coverage under the Travel Delay benefit. This covered reason may also apply if your traveling companion is denied boarding.

Availability of Epidemic Coverage Endorsement, including specific benefits and covered reasons described here, varies by product and by state.  Products may not include all benefits or covered reasons described here. To see if your plan includes this endorsement and what it covers, please look for “Epidemic Coverage Endorsement” on your Declarations of Coverage or Letter of Confirmation. Terms, conditions and exclusions apply. Benefits may not cover the full cost of your loss.  All benefits are subject to maximum limits of liability, which may in some cases be subject to sublimits and daily maximums.
