Due to travel restrictions, plans are only available with effective start dates on or after
Definition: Your trip is interrupted after you’ve left for a covered reason. Travel insurance can reimburse the unused portion of your prepaid expenses, excluding any refunds you receive. If your trip is interrupted for a covered reason, you can file a claim for additional expenses you incur to continue your trip or return to your primary residence, as well as additional accommodation fees you are required to pay, if you prepaid for shared accommodations and your traveling companion has to interrupt their trip.
Trip interruption benefits also can reimburse you for additional accommodation and transportation expenses, up to the maximum limit specified in your plan, if the interruption causes you to stay at your destination (or the location of the interruption) longer than originally planned.
Example: You and a friend plan a week in Key West, Florida to celebrate your graduation. You enjoy two days of palm trees and mai tais, and then a hurricane hits the island. Your hotel loses power, the streets are underwater, and your fun plans get flooded out.
Luckily, your travel insurance plan includes trip interruption benefits. Because your trip was interrupted for a covered reason (your destination is rendered uninhabitable), you can get reimbursed for your unused, non-refundable, prepaid trip expenses. Not only that, but your plan can reimburse you for the cost to change your plane ticket so you can head home early.
Epidemic Coverage Endorsement: While epidemics are generally excluded from travel insurance coverage, we are currently offering certain temporary accommodations for COVID-19 related claims. Also, some of our travel insurance plans now include the new Epidemic Coverage Endorsement, which adds covered reasons to select benefits for certain losses related to COVID-19 and any future epidemic. (Benefits vary by plan and are not available in all jurisdictions).
If your plan includes Trip Interruption benefits and the Epidemic Coverage Endorsement, then your Trip Interruption benefits can apply if, for example, you or a traveling companion are diagnosed with COVID-19 during your trip, or if you’re individually ordered to quarantine before or during your trip because you were exposed to an epidemic disease, such as COVID-19*.
Availability of Epidemic Coverage Endorsement, including specific benefits and covered reasons described here, varies by product and by state. Products may not include all benefits or covered reasons described here. To see if your plan includes this endorsement and what it covers, please look for “Epidemic Coverage Endorsement” on your Declarations of Coverage or Letter of Confirmation. Terms, conditions and exclusions apply. Benefits may not cover the full cost of your loss. All benefits are subject to maximum limits of liability, which may in some cases be subject to sublimits and daily maximums.
*- Benefits for quarantines only apply when an eligible traveler is specifically named and individually ordered to quarantine by order or official directive of a government, public regulatory authority, or the captain of a commercial vessel on which that eligible traveler is booked to travel during the covered trip, based on that eligible traveler’s exposure to COVID-19. The benefit does not cover travel restrictions (whether or not they are referred to as “quarantine”) that apply generally or broadly (a) to some segment or all of a population, geographical area, building, or vessel (including without limitation shelter-in-place, stay-at-home, safer-at-home, or other similar restriction), or (b) based on to, from, or through where the person is traveling. Coverage may not cover the full cost of your quarantine and is subject to applicable benefit limits. Read your plan documents for details.
